John was born about 1863. He was the son of John Caverhill and Frances King. John was born on his father's station at Hawkeswood, however, was education at Christ's College in Christchurch. He initially worked on Cora Lynn station in Canterbury, but eventually became manager of the Grassmere station (where he worked for seven years). John then moved to the Hutt, where he worked as station manager for the Riddiford Brothers. He also worked at Pareroa station, before returning (in 1895) to Hawkeswood station, where he worked as the station manager.
He married Maggie (Madge) Fear in 1901.
John's Obituary also shows that after he left the district of Canterbury, he moved to Raetihi, where he developed the virgin forest. After three years on the land at Tokoroa, he moved to Otorohanga.
He passed away in 1939, aged 76.
Marriage Notice: Star, Issue 7240, 29 October 1901: '"MARRIAGES. CAVERHILL-FEAR - Oct. 17, at St. Barnabas Church, Woodend, by the Rev J. Holland, John Scott, fourth son of the late John Scott Caverhill, to Maggie (Madge), fourth daughter of the late Robert Fear, Slimridge, Waikuku".
