Biography

Henry Coggins was born May 3, 1743, the son of Josiah and Mary (Heard) Coggins of Tewskbury, Mass[1] [2] [3]

In 1755-6 he was noted as a Private in the Company of John Worthington in the Crown Point expedition during the French and Indian War[4]. He likely received a land grant in Nova Scotia in recognition of his service.

Circa 1762, he emigrated to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia[5] [6]. He is noted on the list of grantees in 1767, and was on guard duty in Annapolis in 1776[7]

On December 25, 1764, he married Mary Ellenwood, the daughter of Andrew Ellenwood and Elizabeth Wallis of Beverly, Mass[8] [2] [9], and in 1773 he had 3 sons and two daughters[3], which possibly included:

  1. Henry, who married Sarah Crosby, daughter of Lemuel Crosby and Sarah Wing of Barrington[10], and Yarmouth[11]
  2. Anna, who married Henry Higgins of Mount Desert (Digby) on September 20, 1791 [11]
  3. Sarah, who married Peter Raymond in Digby on May 9, 1797[12].
  4. Elizabeth, born July 6, 1766 in Yarmouth[9]
  5. An Andrew Coggin is also noted in Digby
  6. possibly others

This family also had interests in Maine. On December 10, 1782, Henry Coggin of Frenchman's Bay, Lincoln County, Maine, with the consent of his wife Mary, sold their interests in her father's estate to Robert Haskell[9]
