Biography

Temperance was born in 1740, the daughter of Joseph Stewart and Mary Hall, of Mansfield Connecticut, who were among the first settlers of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

On July 6, 1767, she married Capt Barnabas Eldredge, son of Barnabas and Mary (Hurd) Eldredge of Chatham, who was one of the first settlers of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia[2] [3] [4] [5]

Their children included:

  1. Temperance, born August 23, 1768, who married Joseph Marshall, son of Anthony of Marshalltown, Digby[2] [5]
  2. Lucy, born September 17, 1770[2] [5]
  3. Ebenezer, born October 9, 1772, who married Olive Trask, daughter of Samuel and then married Anna (Ellenwood) Carey, widow of Thomas Carey[2] [5]
  4. Joseph, born December 30, 1774, who married Rebecca Harris, daughter of Benjamin[2] [5]
  5. Stephen, born Feb 24, 1782, who died unmarried[2] [5]
  6. Mary, born September 3, 1784, who married John Hersey son of Levi[2][5]
  7. Levi, who went abroad[2] [5]
  8. Possibly Olive[2] [5]

In 1784, Barnabas Eldredge was lost at sea, off the coast of Maine[2] [5]
