He married first, 24 Jan 1831 in Granville, Annapolis Co., NS, Mary McCormick (dau. of Daniel). The 3 Dec 1831 edition of the New Brunswick Courier reported: "m. Granville, N.S., 24th, by Rev. Wolley, Joshua S. Hawkesworth, Saint John / Mary McCormick eldest d/o Daniel McCormick, former place." She died 10 Sep 1866 in Digby.
In 1861, Joshua S. Hawksworth was residing in Digby, Digby Co. with a family consisting of 1 male 2-3, 1 male, 5-10, 1 female 5-10 [Alice], 2 females 10-15 [Cassandra, Mary], 1 single male 15-20, 2 single males 20-30, 1 single female 20-30 [Susan?], 1 married female 40-50 [Mary, his wife] and 1 married male 50-60 [himself]. This record also shows the death of a female 30-40 in the preceeding year.
He married secondly, 16 Oct 1867, Rachel McCormick (dau. of John). According to the certificate, the event took place in the Church of England, Granville. Joshua was listed as a widowed merchant, 58, born in Digby, s/o John & Mary Hawksworth, residing in Digby and Rachel was a spinster, 55, born Granville, d/o John McCormick, residing Granville.
The Return of Industrial Establishments for the 1871 census of Digby lists J. S. Hawkesworth & Sons, Tanning & Shoe Factory. Does not appear in the 1871 personal census.
Digby County probate records show the Last Will and Testament of Joshua S. Hawkesworth of Digby, dated 19 Oct 1877, listing wife Rachel and children: sons Daniel, Henry, Thorne, William and Clare; and daughters: Susan Cameron, Sarah Saunders, Cassandra Rice, Ellen Dickson and Alice Hawkesworth.

Yarmouth, N.S., at residence of the bride, 16th inst., by Rev. J.T.T. Moody, E.T. Hawkesworth, Digby, N.S. / Miss Maggie Crosby, Yarmouth".[2]
