Biography

John was born in 1924, the son of David Martin Keyser and Elizabeth M Stonebraker. He married Norma Louise Taylor in 1946. John passed away in 2014.[1] (Tombstone photograph requested)

The 1940 census finds John David Keyser, aged 15, and his half brother Harry Burns, aged 5, living with their grandmother Freda Stonebraker. [2]


Obituary for John David Keyser

John D. Keyser, Sr., age 90 of Wintersville, OH passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the Life Line Hospital, Wintersville, OH.

He was born May 6, 1924 in Steubenville the son of the late David M. Keyser and Elizabeth (Stonebraker) Burns.

John was a member of the Wintersville United Methodist church; Wintersville Methodist Men’s Club for 35 years; Toronto American Legion Post #86; Ohio Patriot Guard District # 6; graduate of Steubenville High School; involved in and coached the Wintersville Bulldogs Football team; loved to fish and go camping; was a W.W. II U.S. Army veteran joining in 1943 and served his country in the European Theatre of Operations. He received his basic training at Camp Lee in Virginia and was shipped to England on the Queen Mary ocean liner. He was a supply clerk in General Eisenhower’s headquarters while in England. He later participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France and the freeing of France in 1944. He saw action with the 407th anti-tank company throughout France and Germany. He was part of the contingent that freed the survivors at the Dachau concentration camp.

He was retired from National Steel Corporation – Weirton Steel Company working as a production planner in the strip steel division. He was also vice-president with the Keyser Silk Florist business with his wife Norma.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, married July 20, 1946, Norma L. (Taylor) Keyser; sons David (Suzanne) Keyser, Jr. of Richmond, OH; Wendell L. (Margaret) Keyser of Toronto, OH; Samuel J. (Dinah) Keyser of Bloomingdale, OH and Gary A. (Joann) Keyser of Wintersville, OH; nephew Mark A. (Sheila) Taylor of Wintersville, OH; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.and was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Visitation hours for John will be held 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Sunday, July 13th at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main St., Toronto, OH. 740-537-1234 or 1-855-847-1240.

A celebration service of John’s life will be held 11 A.M. Monday, July 14th at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Welch officiating, Interment will follow at the Ft. Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, OH where there will be full military honors by the Toronto American Legion.

Memorial contributions in memory of John may be made to the Wintersville United Methodist Church, 702 Main St., Wintersville, OH 43953
