Biography

William Caddy was baptized on 14 April 1800[1] in Wendron[2] in Cornwall. His parents were Richard Caddy and Elizabeth Jewell.

William Caddy married Elizabeth Dunstan in Wendron on 2 August 1823[3]. Elizabeth had been baptized in Wendron on 10 November 1799[4]; her parents were named Wearne and Ann. It seems quite certain that the Wearn Dunstan and the Richard Caddy who witnessed the marriage of Elizabeth Dunstan and William Caddy were the fathers of the bride and groom.

Quite certain it seemed, but unfortunately the signature of the marriage witness Wearn Dunstan is nothing like the signature of the Wearn Dunstone who married Ann Uren on 4 April 1795. The marriage witness must have been some other Wearn to whom Elizabeth was related.

William and his father were the witnesses when William's sister Mary Caddy married Francis Gluyas in Wendron on 30 October 1826[5]. It is worth observing that the William Caddy and Richard Caddy signatures on these documents are sufficiently similar in appearance as to reassure us that the people involved have been correctly identified.

William and Elizabeth had the following children:

In each case, except for the first two, the baptism register gives Halabezack as the family's abode. Wendron baptism register entries from before 1827 do not give precise information concerning family abodes, but give only parishes (usually Wendron, of course).

Obviously the 1826 William must have died before the 1829 William was baptized, but there is no burial record to be found.

At the 1841 census William and Elizabeth and their eight surviving children were recorded, at Halabezack[17]. William and his eldest son, Richard, were described as copper miners.

It should be remarked that there is a place in Halabezack that is known as "Caddys Corner"[18].

William Caddy of Halabezack, aged 50, was buried at Wendron on 2 November 1850[19].
