Biography

  • Jonathan was born in 1826 in Tennessee or Alabama to Nathaniel Stubblefield and Polly Armstrong.
  • He married Susan Owens on October 19, 1848, in Osage Co., Missouri.
  • In 1850 they were living in Crawford township, Missouri, with their baby Henry.
  • Next door are his father and mother and 7 younger siblings. Everyone is farming. He is 26 and says he was born in Tennessee, and his 4 oldest siblings are listed as born in Tennessee. The youngest three were born in Illinois and Missouri.
  • Neither Jonathan nor Susan could read or write.
  • In 1860 he and Susan are living in Rolla, Phelps County. But he now says he was born in Alabama. They have 5 children at home, plus Susan's younger brother Frances Owens.
  • In 1863 he registered for the draft in Missouri and says he was born in Alabama in 1826.
  • In 1870 he and Susan have 6 kids at home. Two farms away are the Colliers, who marry the Stubblefields in the next generation.
  • He died on April 22, 1873, in Phelps Co., Missouri.
