Bernard "Buddy" Rich was born on 30 Sep 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, USA, into a family of Jewish-American vaudevillians and experienced the world of stage performance from an early age. By the time he was 4, he was a Broadway song-and-dance prodigy known as "Baby Traps the Drum Wonder", banging out "Stars and Stripes Forever" on his tiny drum.
Buddy Rich was a cousin of actor Jonathan Haze (born Jack Schachter on 01 April 1929). [1]
Buddy Rich was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. He performed with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Count Basie, and led a big band.
Bernard "Buddy" Rich was married on 24 April 1953 to Marie Allison, a dancer and showgirl, until his death in 1987.
In 1954 they had a daughter, Cathy, who later became a vocalist and carried on her father's band. On 12 Dec 2020 Cathy announced on Facebook, the death of her mother Marie (Allison) Rich. [2]
He died on 02 April 1987 [3][4] and was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA. [5]
According to Rolling Stone, Buddy Rich was the 15th greatest drummer of all time.[6]
Research Notes
FamilySearch.org and ancestry.com [7] have family trees which indicate there was another marriage to Betty Jo Brown, but no source has been found, so she was detached as a spouse.
