Biography

Known as Dr. G.S.B. Hempstead, he was the first graduate of the University of Athens, Ohio. He was a resident of Hanging Rock, Lawrence Co.,Ohio for many years, before relocating to Portsmouth, Scioto Co., Ohio. The Ironton Register stated on July 12, 1883: "The deceased was a useful citizen, well educated and of good influence. Portsmouth and southern Ohio suffer by his death."

"The City of Hempstead, TX in Waller County was named for Dr. G. S. B. Hempstead on December 29, 1856 by Dr. Richard Rodgers Peebles (his brother-in-law) and James W. McDade (They organized then as the Hempstead Town Company to sell lots in the newly-established community of Hempstead, which was located at the projected terminus of Houston and Texas Central Railway.) "
