Rowland Hale Whitlock was born 11 Jan 1831 in Surry (now Yadkin) County, North Carolina the son of William and Lavisa (Johnson) Whitlock.[1] He married Minerva Anna Buchanan, daughter of Cornelius and Emily (Johnson) Buchanan, in 1857 with whom he had three children.
Rowland enlisted in Company I, North Carolina 18th Infantry Regiment of the CSA on 10 Sep 1862 at Wake County, North Carolina. Records state he mustered out 16 Feb 1863 at Lynchburg, Virginia but whether he was killed in action or died of disease or injury has not been determined although one undocumented source states disease.[2] He is interred at Old City Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.[3]
