Biography

Samuel was born in 1788.[1] He grew up in Northumberland Pennsylvania.

Samuel relocated to Ohio prior to 1812 as he fought in War of 1812 in the Ohio Malitia.[2][3], most likely came from Northumberland Pennsylvania to Ohio in 1803 along with brother Alexander and other Laverty family members who settled in Franklin County Ohio.[4]

Samuel married Elizabeth Ghormley February 15 1816 in Ohio.[5] [6] Samuel and Elizabeth had 14 children.[7]

My Heritage and 1850 census reports Samuel's birthplace as Pennsylvania.[8][9] Rootsweb and Iowa Gravestone Photo Project state Samuel was born in Ireland, landed in Pennsylvania.[10][11] Family emigration date was 1788 (same year as Samuel's birth year) per FamilySearch.org.[12] and Laverty Genealogy Blog [13]

Samuel and brother John Laverty came to Indiana in 1817.[14]

The 1820 census for Vigo indiana shows an entry for the family of Samuel Laverty, followed by an entry for brother John Laverty followed by an entry for brother James Laverty, and on the same page as their sister Margaret Laverty's family (Michael Ghormley).[15] Ages of spouse and children for all 4 Lavertys in 1820 census matches records of their families.

The U.S. General Land Office granted Samuel the following land patents on property west of Mecca and east of Clinton in Parke County Indiana: in 1825 160 acres, in 1835 2 patents for 40 acres each, and in 1837 80 acres.[16]

The 1830, 1840 and 1850 census show Samuel in Parke Indiana.[17][18][19] Parke County was created out of Vigo County in 1821.[20]

Samuel obtained patents on numerous parcels of land in Warren County Iowa between 1853 and 1856.[21]

Samuel passed away in 1857 and was buried in Warren County Iowa.[1]

Notes

Samuel probably relocated to the Columbus Ohio area in 1803 with his brother Alexander and other family members. But the 1810 census records in Ohio were mostly destroyed in a fire. And there is a Samuel and Alexander "Lafferty" on the same page of the 1810 census in Kentucky [22] and brother James was known to have briefly lived in Kentucky a few years earlier, However that census shows Samuel with 2 children (he was single) and ages do not match for Samuel or Alexander, so Ohio is most likely Samuel's location in 1810. Samuel was in Ohio no later than 1812 per his military service record.
