Joseph Dyer/Dyar was born in Boston, Massachusetts Bay, in February of 1717/8, a son of Joseph and Lydia (Hough) Dyer. A cooper, he (re-)instituted the spelling of his surname "Dyar", as it appears on the gravestone of his grandfather[1]; he married first, at Boston, Abiel/Abial Marston, on the 12th of March, 1740/1. He married second, Amey Bumstead, on the 23rd of January, 1766; he died prior to the proving of his mother's will in 1780, for which reason his inheritance passed directly to his children.[2]
