Biography

Anna Maria (Ann) Munch was born in Powell's Fort Valley, Shenandoah County, Virginia, in 1793, daughter of Philip Munch and Magdalena. She is called Mary in her mother's will and in her marriage record, but in the 1850 census and 1860 mortality census she is "Ann M." On December 10, 1810 "Anna Mary Munch, orphan of Philip Munch, over the age of 14, chose David McInturff as her guardian" and in the 1811 deed naming all the surviving children of Philip Munch she is "Anna Mary." The name on her tombstone is "Ann Mariah," She married Daniel Walter in 1821, lived in the "Fort" all her life and was mother of four children. Her tombstone has her birth year as 1795, but gives her age as 65 years, 10 months and 21 day, which would mean a birth year of 1794, but both dates are incorrect. She is listed as 57 years old in the 1850 census and 67 years old in the Mortality Schedule of the 1860 census. She is also listed as the next to the last child, and her sister "Betsy," as last one (ie. youngest) in her mother's will and in the deeds involving the Munch children.
