Bright keeps Mifflin-area nursery all part of familyPublished: June 4, 2006 12:00 AM By KRISTINE PHILIPSDix CommunicationsMIFFLIN Skip Bright has returned to his roots literally. After forming his own construction landscaping business, Bright has returned to take over his family's business, Bright's Nursery and Landscaping, a year after the death of his father. With the experience from his own business and the memory of his father in his mind, Bright is integrating the two businesses as well as working to improve them.A heart-shaped stone with the establishment date sits on a retaining wall in front of the store as a reminder of the company's history. His parents, Bruce and Dellie Bright, originally began the business in 1952 in Mifflin with a Studebaker truck and a load of shrubs."Dad just loved plants," Bright said. "Anyone could pull into the drive with a leaf, and he could tell you what it was, who found it and what its weaknesses are. He could tell you anything."His father's love for plants made the business flourish at its original location. The couple moved to another location just outside Mifflin before coming to the business' current 68-acre location 13 years ago, on the corner of U.S. Route 30 and state Route 511.Around the same time, Bright founded Tri-B Construction and Landscaping. While the business is flourishing now, a year ago it was in poor shape when Bruce Bright died. Dellie Bright tried to take over the business, but found that she was unable to keep it going the way it had when her husband was alive.Of their three children, Bright was the only one who had stayed in landscaping, so she asked if he would take over the business."Dad always wanted me to have this," said Bright. "He wanted it to stay in the same name; he didn't want it sold."The transition wasn't a smooth one, though. Bright and his mother negotiated and talked until they came up with an arrangement suitable to both: He would integrate the two businesses together to create Bright's Nursery and Landscaping Inc.Now the business offers a variety of shrubs, as well as landscaping, concrete work, deck building, retaining walls and topsoil and gravel work."I miss my dad," Bright said. "I wish this was something we could have done together. I am sure he'd be proud. I'm sure it'd ruffle his feathers that I'm changing some of his ways."
