Research Notes
From Marion County, Ohio Land Records at familysearch.org: Abraham Patten of Marion County paid $1000 to John Merrill and his wife Leah to purchase 100 acres of land that was part of Virginia Military Land Survey #10918, dated 11 Feb 1861, his first and only recorded purchase there (30:20). Abraham sold 40 acres of this to his son Elisha W. Patten on 17 Oct 1865, and 20 acres to son Elias F. Patten on 19 April 1881 (39:181 and 51:319). After his death his estate sold the remaining 40 acres on 20 July 1886 to [his son-in-law] John Drollinger (61:358), subject to the widow's dower rights for the north 16 acres. Abraham signed and his wife Catharine Ann marked her deeds. A deed from Abraham Patten "an unmarried man" [thus Abraham Jr] to Joel B. Patten on 7 Jan 1885 sells his 1/14 share of his father Abraham Patton deceased's 100 acres (minus 40 minus 20) (60:552) thus Abraham senior had 14 living heirs when he died.
There was a Patton Genealogy edited by John J. Davis and "published" by Leo E. Patton about 1946, which was distributed to many family members who helped provide information, my mother-in-law included. One copy of this typewritten manuscript includes many handwritten notes by JJ Davis and may have been his working copy. This copy and some family photos were found in an antique store and forwarded to me by a person with no connection to the family. He has a handwritten list on the back of one page which gives birth and death dates for Elias F. Patton and his wife Margaret F. (Carter) and their 10 children, and for Elias' father, and for both of Margaret's parents. At the bottom it says, "Most of the above copied from the Family Bible". Here it says, "Abraham, father of Elias F. Patton, born Oct. 15, 1807 in Virginia, died Jan. 19, 1883 in Marion County, Ohio".
The narrative told in the Patton Genealogy includes the following about Abraham: Abraham was the oldest son of Robert Patton and Mary Halterman, daughter of Christian Halterman, who married in Virginia in July 1806, he being born 15 months later. They lived in Harrison County, Virginia, near the present Clarksburg, West Virginia. Robert had served in the War of 1812 in northwestern Ohio under General William Henry Harrison, and decided to move to Ohio afterwards. He sold the 120 acres he inherited from his father and moved his family to Hocking County, Ohio early in 1817, when Abraham was 9. "Abraham remembered that when they arrived at the Ohio River the wind was so strong that no one would put out a boat to cross. But they were told that if that wind kept up the river would freeze over and they would not need a boat. Three days later this came true and they crossed on the ice bringing the horses and wagon. They were among the first settlers in Green township." Abraham married in 1832 to Rosannah Hamilton and they had 3 children but she died young. He remarried in 1842 to Catherine Self. Abraham and two brothers were running a mill that his father had started. In 1856 he turned over his portion of this business to his brothers and headed west, following his wife's brothers to the old Virginia Military Reservation in southwestern Marion County, Ohio that fall. His 3 children by his first wife all stayed in Hocking County and all had married by 1860. Abraham lived on his farm near Agosta, Ohio until he died in 1883.
