Jan was born on 7 october 1863 in Utrecht, Utrecht, the Netherlands. He was the son of JJohannes Anthonius van Zutphen (1832-) and Elisabeth Maria Grossenbach. His father was "wijnkopersknecht" He was born at midnight at his parents home: Groenesteeg "wijk A 601" [1] He grew up in The Amsterdam neighborhood "Kattenburg". As six year old he earned his pocket money by unraveling searope every morning between 4 and 8 o'clock. His mother and oldest sister died of tuberculoses. He and his brother got to live in a very strict and fanatic religious foster family. That's where he started to get an aversion against religious fanatism.[2]
He finished elementary school and started as a carpenter apprentice in the building world. He followd further schooling during the evenings: Dutch, History and "projecttekenen" [2]
At the age of 13 he fell from the scaffolding and injured his legs so seriously, he had to stay in bed for 9 months. After that he changed profession and became a diamond cutters apprentice. Due to his craftmanship he became a diamant cutters boss at the age of 20.[2] In 1883 he becam a member of the Sociaal Democratische Bond (SDB)[2] In 1888 he became chairman of its subdivision the Sociaal Democratische Diamantbewerkingsvereeniging. It had only 15 members.[2] In 1889 the subdivision became independant to attract more jewish diamont cutters.[2] In 1894 he played an important role in the succesfull diamontcutters strike. He did'nt start it but the small strike evolve into a mass strike of about 10,000 workers. He did this together with Henri Polak, a jewish diamontcutter who joined the strike committee. The two of them decided to found the Algemeene Nederlandsche Diamantbewerkersbond (AND). Polak became the chairman, Van Zutphen the secretary.[2]
In 1883 - at the age of 20 - he was approbated for military service. He was a diamond cutter. According to his record he looked as follows:
He started his military service on 11 may 1883 in regiment C artillery. On 30 april 1889 he received his passport and could go home.[3]
In 1883 - military record - his occupation is "diamantslijper" In 1917 - at the wedding of his daughter - he is mentioned as "secretaris diamantbewerkersbond" In 1922 - wedding son - his occupation is mentioned as being a "bestuurder vakvereniging" In 1937 he is mentioned as not having an occupation
He married Emmetje Lamme on 10 february 1887 In Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, the Netherlands at the age of 23. [4] /they started their life together at the Ferdinand Bolstraat 35 were they lived from feb 1887 til oct1887[5] They had four children, two sons and two daughters.
In 1890 - when he was living at the "van de Helstr. 23 (3 hoog) - he was treated in the "Binnengasthuis" in Amserdam for 91 days because of "bursitis praepaesell(?)" [6]
After the death of his first wife he married for the second time on 17 december 1919 in Amsterdam to Bernardina Johanna Greger. Her age was 24, his 56. [7]They had two children, a daughter and a son.
He passed away on 7 june1958 in Hilversum, Noord-Holland, the Netherlands at the age of 94.[8]
