Biography

Harry was born in 1861 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, the son of John Gadd and Rebecca Ann Barker. [1]

In the 1871 census Harry was living with his parents at 85 Mill St, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. He was aged 9 years. Note: Harry's name reads more like Mary than Harry but he was clearly recorded as a son. [2]

In 1881 the family was living at 104 Mill St, Hanley, Stoke Upon Trent. Harry, aged 20, was a puddler. [3]

Henry Gadd, as he was hereafter recorded, married Harriet Bloor on 24 December 1882 at St. Matthew’s Church, Etruria, Hanley. Their marriage certificate recorded Henry was a bachelor aged 21 and a forge man. His father was named as John Gadd, a forge man. Harriet was a spinster aged 23. Her father was named as Benton Bloor, a potter. At the time of their marriage both parties were living at Stone Road. Their witnesses were Thomas Bloor, Harriet's brother, and Phoebe Gadd, Henry's sister. Harriet and both witnesses signed with their mark. [4]

This couple had ten known children named Phoebe Ann born 1883, Thomas born 1885, May born 1887, Mary Louisa born 1889, Ada born 1891, Henry born 1892, Samuel born 1894, Elizabeth born 1897, Harriet born 1899 and John born 1903. [5]

Daughters Phoebe Ann and May were baptised at the Holy Trinity Church, Hope, a chapelry in Shelton township, Stoke upon Trent. May's baptism took place on 13 April 1887. The family was then living at 3 Thomas St and Henry was a forgeman. May's date of birth was recorded as 29 March 1887. Phoebe was baptised in 1888. The date of her baptism was not recorded but the baptism before hers took place on 6 June. The family was still at 3 Thomas St. Phoebe's date of birth was incorrectly recorded as 24 September 1888 [she was born in 1883].
Mary Louisa and Ada were baptised at St. Mark's Church, Shelton, Mary on 30 June 1889 and Ada on 2 April 1891. The family was still at 3 Thomas St when Mary was baptised but had moved to 5 Granville St by the time Ada was baptised. Henry was an ironworker at both baptisms. [6]

Son Thomas Gadd died in 1886 aged under 12 months. [7]

In the 1891 census the family was living at 5 Granville St, Stoke on Trent. Henry, aged 29, was an ironworker, employed as a ball furnace man. Harriet was aged 31. Children Phobe, May, Mary and Ada were aged 7, 4, 2 and 1 month respectively. Also living with them was Harriet's brother Thomas Bloor. Aged 36, he was putter's handler. [8]

Daughter Ada Gadd died in 1891 before her first birthday. [9]

Of interest the property the family was living in the 1891 census was advertised for sale in the Staffordshire Advertiser dated 26 October 1895, Pg 8. The advertisement read in part [other lots were also available] -

Daughter Elizabeth Gadd died in 1897 aged under 12 months. [11]

In 1901 the family was living at 4 William St, Hanley. Henry, aged 39, was then an ironworker's labourer. Harriet was aged 40. Phoebe, aged 17, was a potter's still maker and May, aged 14, a potter's tranferer. Mary was aged 12, Henry aged 9, Samuel aged 6 and Harriet aged 2. [12]

In 1911 the family was living at 19 Twemlow Street, Hanley. Henry, aged 49, was an ironworker, working at a blast furnace. Harriet was aged 52. May, aged 24, and Louie, as named, aged 22, were both dippers at a pottery. Samuel, aged 16, was a bricklayer at a brick yard. Harriet was aged 12 and John aged 7. [13]

Harriet died in 1914 aged 55 years. [14]

From The Staffordshire Sentinel dated 14 December 1914, Pg 7 -
SUDDEN DEATH.
An inquest was also held by the Deputy Coroner on the body of Harriet Gadd, the wife of Henry Gadd, an ironworker, living at 21, Granville-street, who died after a short illness at midnight on Saturday. According to the evidence of the husband, his wife, who was fifty-five years of age, had been a strong, healthy woman, and had never been attended by a doctor in her life. Her death was sudden. Dr. Wallis was called in some hours after the woman’s death. From his examination of the body, he came to the conclusion that death was due to heart failure, following Bright’s disease.
The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. [15]

Bright's disease is a historical classification of kidney diseases that would be described in modern medicine as acute or chronic nephritis. It was characterized by swelling and the presence of albumin in the urine, and was frequently accompanied by high blood pressure and heart disease. [16]

Henry died in 1932 aged 70 years. [17]
