Biography

Amanda Elizabeth "Mandy" Russell was born on the 12th of June, 1869 in Rogersville, Hawkins, Tennessee, United States. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Russell (abt.1837-abt.1931) and Elizabeth J. (Hicks) Russell (abt.1844-abt.1875).^[1]

In 1870 Amanda and her family were living in District 11 (Hamblen), Hawkins, Tennessee. Amanda is one of seven children in the household. Just above them on the Census is the Parker family and her future husband, Joseph Parker, then age 4. ^[2]

Amanda had two children from a relationship prior to her marriage in 1906 to Joe Parker. The father is Unknown. ^[3]

In 1900 Amanda appears to be staying at her father's house. She has the last name of Howerton and 3 children with her. Its thought that she "adopted" the surname Howerton for awhile, despite being unwed, but its not known why. The father of the three children is unknown^[4][5]

Amanda married Joseph Johnson Parker on the 24th of December, 1906 in Hamblen, Tennessee, United States. He was widowed and had 4 known children from his first wife Lydia. Its believed that Joseph may have fathered children with Amanda prior to his marriage to her in 1906,^[6] Children of Amanda and Joe Parker after marriage;^[3]

Amanda died on 21 Aug 1947 in Morristown, Hamblen, Tennessee, United States and is buried in the Emma Jarnagin Cemetery.^[7][8]

Research Notes

Brick Wall Help! The father of Amanda's children, Mary, Jerry, William and Walter, is unknown.

Amanda is not in her parents household in 1880, so far she has not been located on that Census. Its possible she is visiting family. Also missing from the parents household is her older brother William who married in April of 1880 and her older sister Nancy. Nancy's location in 1880 has not been found and her death date is unknown.

In the death registration (see sources) for Amanda it gives her parents as Jerry Russell and Unknown Lovin. Mothers maiden name -Possibly an error? Is there an explanation?? Report is given by her son Louis Parker.

Even stranger is this death record for an Amanda Russell, spouse of Linus Russell who was daughter of Jack Amos and Melvina Lovin. The dates are wrong so not the same person as this Amanda. But wondering if there is some connection as this Amanda's son ,Louis, gave her mothers maiden name as Lovin on her death registration.
