Norman Garstin was born in 1847, the son of Colonel William Garstin and his wife Mary Hastings Moore. His father committed suicide when he was young and, as his mother suffered from muscular paralysis, he was brought up by relatives. In 1886 he married Louisa Fanny Jones, and they had three children. The 1901 UK census recorded the whole family living together at Penzance.[1] A painter, teacher, art critic, and journalist, he was a member of the Newlyn School. He died in 1926.[2]
