Samuel Stiness, the immigrant ancestor, was born in 1750 and settled before the revolution in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He was a mariner and master mariner. He was a soldier in the revolution in Captain William Blacker's company of Marblehead, Colonel John Glover's regiment, from June to December 1775 (see p. 908, vol. xiv, Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution). He married (first) (intention dated December 2, 1774) Rebecca Widger, of Marblehead, (second) July 11, 1776, Mary Widger. He died before December 7, 1788, when his widow, Mary, married at Marblehead, William Allen. He had one son, Samuel, mentioned below. (The surname Stiness is also spelled Stenness and Stinness in the early records.)
