Biography

Andrew Sagendorf was about 84 yrs. He was a Colorado Pioneer. He arrived there on November 6th 1858. He is buried next to wife Dora McLain Sagendorf & son WL Sagendorf & Mary Lodge, Anna & Dr LB McLain.

Andrew Sagendorf could be considered instrumental in joining three Cherry Creek towns making them then the City of Denver. He was born in New York on August 26, 1828. He moved Nebraska in 1856, becoming a citizen of Omaha. Later he caught the “Pike's Peak fever” early in the autumn of 1858 bring him across the plains to Cherry Creek in November 6 1856. He engaged in placer mining along the Platte and on upper Clear Creek. In 1859 he became Secretary of the Auraria City Town Company. In 1863 when the government bought and took possession of Clark, Gruber & Co.'s premises for the purposes of a “Mint,” he was appointed Weighing Clerk there. Later he became Private Secretary to Governor John Evans, and Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue. In December, 1865, he was appointed Postmaster at Denver, a position he filled until June, 1869, when he resigned on account of ill health. Subsequently he received the contract for erecting the government buildings at the White River Ute Agency, and after completion of that work he was for several years engaged in stock-raising in Douglas county. He then removed to Colorado Springs where he established himself in the drug business and resided about ten years. Returning to Denver in 1884, he became Registrar of the State Board of Land Commissioners, serving six years. Since 1884 Mr. Sagendorf has continuously been a citizen of Denver, and true to his pioneer preferences has his residence on what was once part of the ample land-area claimed by the Auraria City Town Company. As the reader will have seen in this note, and elsewhere in this volume, Mr. Sagendorf has been a prominent figure in the history of Denver. —J. C. S.
