Biography

Born in N.C., December 25, 1854, Elizabeth Bennett Jarrett was the daughter of J. N. (or M?) Bennett, b. in N.C. and ---- Gillett Bennett b. in Tennessee.
On October 23, 1917, (Waynesville?) Haywood Co., N.C., Elizabeth Bennett Jarrett, still married, died at the age of 65. (provided info. stated her age as 65, but by the dates given for birth and death, her age would have been 62.)
A possibly son of Elizabeth Bennett Jarrett was Spanish American War Soldier, Pvt Oliver A. Jarrett. (if this was correct, then she was possibly married to James P. Jarrett) See the Memorial Page of Oliver A. Jarrett for more information.)
The 1900 Fines Creek, Haywood Co., N.C. Census below shows most likely the same family as pertaining to the above.

It states that Elizabeth & James had been married for 25 years. Elizabeth had had 8 children and with 7 still living. (the deceased most likely was Oliver A. Jarrett.) There appeared to be all other children still residing in the household. All were listed as being born in N.C.

Research Notes

Per Mrs. R.T. Messer (Herma Jarrett): Elizabeth Elvira married James P. Jarrett, son of John and Polly Rogers Jarrett. They reared eight children. Soon after their marriage they bought a farm at the head of Wesley'sCreek, a tributary of Fines Creek. The place was known as Bearwallow Gap. Here the first four children were born.

Sometime around 1882 they sold this farm and bought on Cataloochee. Theirs was the first place reached on entering the valley. Here he opened a store and was successful in getting a post office established, the first in the valley. The mail at that time was being carried from Waynesville to Cove Creek, spent the night there, carried next day to Mt. Sterling, meeting a carrier from Tennessee there. The carrier made two trips a week. For several years Ellis Howell had the contract to deliver this mail. He hired an old man, Tom Esau Caldwell, to carry it. He walked, carrying the mail pouch on his back. I can remember many times seeing the old fellow come in about 12 o'clock, wet, cold, and exhausted. While my father attended to the mail, Mother would give Uncle Tom, as we called him, a seat in front of the fire. She put a little table beside him with a hot cup of coffee and some food. He would depart saying, "God bless you, Mrs. Jarrett, for being good to a hungry and tired old man."

About 1889, Father sold out farm and business on Cataloochee and bought a farm on Fines Creek. It was located on the Tom Russell branch just above the Hardy Noland farm. He remained here till 1903. It was from this place that the four older children left the home nest and started life for themselves.

In 1903, Father, Mother, and the four younger children moved to Jackson County. He bought a house and lot at Dillsboro. Here Mother ran a boarding house, and Father had a store. This was their last home. They stayed here till the children all married and started on their own. Then they broke up housekeeping.

Mother went to Charlotte, N. C., to stay with her youngest daughter, Mrs. C. M. Danner, whose health had broken down. She stayed here till Jalie died and stayed on with Danner and the four small children till Danner married again. Then she came to my home where she stayed till she died three years later, October 23, 1917.

On leaving Dillsboro, Father, who had always had an itching foot, went to Alabama for several months, then on to Texas for a year. Then he returned to N. C., worked several years for the Imperial Life Insurance Company at three or four different towns in the central part of the state. He quit work when he was 70 years old, but he still travelled.

He made a trip with a bunch of tourists to the Holy Land, to Egypt, Rome, toured Europe and England, home via Canada. He wrote a book about this trip. Later he visited the Bahama Islands, travelling over several of the islands and spending some time on Green Turtle Key.

He died May 26, 1943, in his 91st year, at the home of his daughter, Minnie Cunningham, in Clearwater, Florida. James P. Jarrett, born February 4, 1852. He was reared in Asheville, came to Haywood County in his early twenties. Married Elizabeth Elvira Bennett February 27, 1875. Eight children were born to them:

Got orders to go to Savannah, Georgia, and take a ship to Havana. He reached Savannah, died in hospital of spinal meningitis March 16, 1899. He is buried in a national cemetery at Beaufort, S. C.

Herma Orah. Born September 30, 1877. Married Rastus Thomas Messer March 14, 1902. Since I am the writer of this bit of family history, I will write something more of this couple when I have finished the book.

John Newton was born November 27, 1879. He graduated from Weaverville College. He married Florence Embler. Settled in Asheville and started work in the life insurance business. He was one of the founders of the Imperial Life Insurance Company and spent his life building up this company. He died November 21, 1941. He left no children. Elbert Manson was born August 15, 1881. He married Bertha Dozier, a German girl who had only been in America a few weeks when they married. He settled in Asheville and spent his working years at Jarrett's Furniture Store. He is now (January 1, 1956) retired, living on a farm near Asheville, on the Sweeten Creek Road. He has two sons, Claude, of Asheville, and Elmo of Daytona Beach, Florida, and a stepson, Larry Jarrett.

Marcus Young was born March 23, 1883. Graduated from Rutherford College. He married Minnie Snyder. Settled at Dillsboro. He was Postmaster there for several years, then spent his time farming, lumbering, and so forth, always a busy man. He is now retired. His wife is dead. He lives with his daughter, Evylin. He reared two daughters, Edith, who first married Harold Morgan. They had two sons, Harold Jr. and Larry. Edith is now Mrs. Whitworth and lives in Asheville. Evylin married Realus Sutton and lives at Dillsboro.

Minnie Lee. Born January 21, 1880. She married W. C. Cunningham, March 5, 19??. They settled at Franklin. Were in the mercantile business till the Depression closed them out. Later, Cunningham went to California. Died there. Minnie and children spent two or three years in Atlanta, Georgia, then went to Clearwater, Florida. She bought an apartment house at 1731 Apache Trail and is still there. They had three children, Avery, Elizabeth, and Edwin. Avery married Mary Sue Gribble. They had two children, Barbary and James Avery. Avery died when these children were small. They are now grown and living in Tampa, Florida. Elizabeth is now Mrs. Bill Spain and lives in Clearwater, Florida. Edwin is married and has two small daughters. He lives in Clearwater, but teaches in St. Petersburg high school system.

James Philetus was born ____ 15, 1886. He married Julia McMahan, and they settled at Greensboro, N. C. Three children were born to them, Lillian, Wade, and Rex. Julia died when these children were small. Fleet, as we have always called him, then married Lillian Lewis, and they have one daughter, Doris. Fleet spent a good part of his life in the furniture business. He is now (January 1, 1956) retired and living on a farm near Greensboro. Lillian married Prof. Monroe Madison and is now living at Webster. She has been principal of the school there for several years. They have two children, Louise and Roe, I think the son is called. I last heard of Wade in California, unmarried and unsettled. Rex married Reva McGaha. They are living in Asheville. Have children, but I know very little of them.

Jalie Francis was born May 12, 1888. She married Carl M. Danner and moved to Charlotte, N. C. Four children were born to them, Allice, twin sons Ralph and Raymond, and Dennis. Jalie died October 3, 1914. Dennis died in his teens. The other children are married and living around Charlotte. Allice married Alley Warner. They have three daughters. I seldom see or hear from any of them.
