Biography

Alice Scott, daughter of Patrick and Adelia, was born about 1856. She was born in Champaign County, Illinois. [1]

Alice married George H. Abbot in Champaign County, Illinois on Feb 24, 1876. [2]

In 1880 she lived in Mahomet, Champaign, Illinois with her husband George, age 29 and one daughter Winnifard (sic), age 2. [3]

In 1900 she lived in Taylor Township, Greene County, Missouri. George, age 50, and Alllace (sic), age 42, were the only people in the household. [4]

In 1910 the census lists her in Campbell, Greene County, Missouri. The household includes only George age 57, Alice age 53. [5]

In 1920 Alice, age 64, and her husband George, age 70, lived in Bunnell, Florida. [6]

She died 21 Oct 1920 in Bunnell, Flagler, Florida. [1] and is buried at Espanola Cemetery, in Espanola, Flagler, Florida. [7]

Mrs. Alice Scott Abbott...was claimed by the grim reaper shortly after the noon hour today. The end was not unexpected but none the less a shock to Mrs. Abbot's host of friends in Bunnell and Flagler County, and will be deeply regretted in many sections of the United States, for she was widely known as a lecturer in the W.C.T.U. and Woman Suffrage movements during her long and eventful like.
She was loved and respected by everyone who knew her and the sympathies of the entire community goes out to her immediate relatives in their loss.

Activities

Mrs. Abbott was widely known as a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). "During the early stages of the strike of 1910 [In Missouri], Alice Scott Abbot, a state WCTU lecturer and organizer helped form a local chapter in Ilasco. She and New London's Jennie Alexander... addressed the opening meeting. [9]

By 1914, the suffrage trail found its way to Flagler County. A prominent lecturer and organizer for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), Alice Scott Abbott joined her husband as they boarded a train leaving Springfield, Missouri, bound for Bunnell.
Attending the Annual Convention of the WCTU as a delegate-at-large from Bunnell, Mrs. Abbott witnessed the organization champion women’s efforts to secure the vote in order to protect women and girls earning wages, stop the sale of legal liquor to prevent abuse from drunken men, and defeat trafficking of women and girls.
In addition to her temperance duties, she was a local music teacher and music director for the Bunnell Methodist and Seventh Day Adventist churches.
