Biography

Benjamin Jenkins was born about 1759 in Kittery, Maine, to Benjamin and Mary (Shepard) Jenkins (see research notes)[1]. Benjamin served in Revolutionary War and War of 1812; his time in the Revolutionary War is recounted in great detail in his widow's pension application[2].

He first married Anna Batson on 6 May 1780 in the Third Parish Church of Kittery, Maine[3]. They moved about 1787 to New Castle, when Benjamin was taxed there[4]. Anna (Batson) Jenkins died 28 May 1810 in New Castle[5]. Benjamin married Hannah White as his second wife on 15 Sep 1811[6]. Benjamin Jenkins died on 27 Oct 1816 in New Castle, New Hampshire[6]. He is buried in George Locke Field Cemetery in New Castle alongside Ann.

Research Notes

Birth Date Estimation Method: Benjamin's birth date is estimated from his age of death (57 yrs.) on his gravestone[5] (Image of stone on FindAGrave, see Sources).

Martha Fernald issue: Benjamin Jenkins is known to have married at least two women: Anna/Ann Batson on 21 Nov 1783[3], who is buried alongside him as his wife, having died 28 May 1810[5]; and Hannah White on 15 Sep 1811, as verified by multiple sources in his pension file[6]. Stackpole (1903) in Old Kittery includes Martha Fernald as his second wife, without mentioning verified wife Hannah[1]. Kittery vital records do show a Benjamin Jenkins married a Martha Fernald on 4 Jan 1804[7]. However, the date of marriage to Martha (1804) conflicts with the death date (1810) of Ann Batson, and includes no mention that he resides in New Castle. Unless he left Ann before her death (extremely unlikely as they are buried together as husband and wife), the Benjamin Jenkins who married Martha Fernald in Kittery is likely a different person.

Alternate Death: His gravestone has his death date as 16 Oct 1816, but the verified date is 27 Oct 1816[6]
