Matthew Fetherstonhaugh MP FRS is Notable.

Born about 1714 Matthew Fetherstonhaugh was son of a merchant of Newcastle upon Tyne, Matthew Fetherstonhaugh, and his wife, Sarah Browne.[1]

In 1746 he succeeded to estates in Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and the City of London on the death of Sir Henry Fetherston Bt. On 24 December 1746 at St Anne, Soho, he married Sarah Lethieullier, [2] daughter of Christopher Lethieullier [1] and his wife, Sarah Lascelles at St Anne, Soho. [3] They were parents of an only child, their son, Harry. [1]

Uppark

In 1747 he and Sarah purchased Uppark in Sussex [4]and in 1754 Matthew bought the lease on land and a ruinous building bordering on St James's Park from Viscountess Falmouth.

Dover House
The old buildings were pulled down and the house that was eventually to be known as Dover House was built to the designs of James Paine.[5]

In 1755 Matthew was returned to parliament unopposed in a by-election for Morpeth to replace Robert Ord who had been appointed to office. [6] In 1761 he turned his attention to Portsmouth and was returned as member together with Sir Edward Hawke. [7]

His father died in 1762 when Matthew inherited estates in Northumberland, Kent and Middlesex.[1] Robert passed away 18 March 1774 [1]and was buried at St Margaret of Antioch, Stanford-Le-Hope on the 26th. [8]
