Jonathan was the son of Matthias and Alice (Robbins) Whitney

He married Olive Cady, daughter of Isaiah and Mary (Nelson) Cady, in Nov 1784 at Killingly, Windham, CT - their children were Ransom, Martha, Lucena, Charles, Asa, Walter, Francis and Horace Whitney

He settled in North Flat, PA in 1804 and built the first sawmill in Windham Twp. on the Little Mehoopaney Creek near Jenningsville, PA
