Biography

Childhood, New Brunswick

Sarah S. Smart, seventh eldest of the eleven children of William Smart and Ann Brockway, was born in Pleasant Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 25 Aug 1839.[2] New Brunswick was at the time a British Colony, and it remained so until 1867, becoming that year one of Canada's four founding provinces.[3] As for Pleasant Ridge, a tiny, rural community along the New Brunswick's Magaguadavic River,[4] it was part of Saint Patrick Parish until 1856, when Dumbarton Parish was formed from Saint Patrick's northern half.[5]

Sarah's six elder siblings were her brother, Nathan, who was born in 1825,[7] her sister, Agnes, who was born in 1828,[8] her sister, Jane, who was born in 1830,[9] her brother, Reuben, who was born in 1832,[10] her sister, Abigail, who was born in 1835,[11] and her sister, Mary, who was born in 1838.[12]. She had five junior siblings: her brother, John, who was born in 1842,[13] her sister, Margaret, who was born in about 1845,[14] her brother, William, who was born in about 1847,[15] and her brother, Charles, who was born in 1855.[16]

Sibling Marriages, Emigrations

The age differences among Sarah and her siblings was considerable. In 1847, the likely year her brother, William, was born, Susan's eldest brother, Nathan, emigrated to the United States. [7] Nathan settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin,[7]a place that would draw other of Susan's brothers, later. Also beginning in 1847, Susan's three eldest siblings married. Her sister, Agnes, wed George Wooden in 1847 and by 1851 emigrated to the United States, settling in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, on the Atlantic coast, about 300 miles southwest of Pleasant Ridge.[8] ,[8] Her brother, Nathan, returned to New Brunswick in 1848 to wed Rebecca Pratt in 1848, and they likely immediately returned to the United States to settle in Oshkosh.[7] Finally, in 1850, Susan's sister, Jane, wed Thomas Steen.[9]

Jane and her husband, Thomas, remained in New Brunswick. In 1851, however, Jane continued to reside in the "frame house" of her parents in Pleasant Ridge, with eleven year-old Susan and their other siblings, Reuben, Abigail, Mary, Calvin, Margaret and William.[18]

Sarah's sister, Mary, wed, in Bath, Maine (about 160 miles southwest of Pleasant Ridge), Alexander Dubar, in 1854.[12] (This connection to Bath later grew among Sarah's sisters, and, eventually, as will be shown, Sarah and one of her daughters would be buried there.) In about 1855, Sarah's parents had their eleventh and last child, Charles,[16] and her brother, Reuben, emigrated to the United States, settling permanently in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.[10] By 1860, her brother, Nathan, had emigrated to Wisconsin, too, to Oshkosh, about thirty miles west of Manitowoc.[7] Sarah's sister, Agnes, had by 1860 emigrated to Bath, Maine,[8] joining her sister, Mary, there.[12] As for Sarah and her parents, they remained in Pleasant Ridge in 1861, residing there with four of Sarah's siblings (John, Margaret, William and Charles), Sarah's elderly maternal grandfather, Reuben Brockway, and a school teacher named Lucinda Morrell.[19] Sarah's sister, Margaret, died in Pleasant Ridge, 3 Feb 1862, at about age 17.[14]

Marriage, Children

Sarah married Samuel E. Bucknam, an injured Civil War veteran of the Battle of Gettsburg,[20] 15 Oct 1863.[21] Samuel was discharged from service, 1 Apr 1864,[20] and he and Sarah would have six children.[22] Five of those children are known. In Maine, they had apparently their first, a daughter, Lillie, in about 1865.[23] Sarah's father contracted cancer and died in her birth home in Pleasant Ridge, New Brunswick, 9 Feb 1866, at age 66.[24] Sarah and Samuel then had in Maine, another daughter, Louise, in about 1867.[25] They moved to Brooklyn, New York, with their daughters, where, in 1870, they owned a home, and Samuel worked as a ship carpenter.[26] They lost their daughter, Lillie, to unknown cause, 19 Mar 1872.[23] Within months of Lillie's death, they had, in New York, a son, Alfred, Aug 1872.[27] They then had, specifically in Brooklyn, two daughters, Anna Elizabeth (Lizzie), born 7 Oct 1874,[28] and Georgia, born in 1878.[29] As of 5 Jun 1880, Sarah and Samuel resided with Louise, Alfred, Lizzie and Georgia, at 69 Pike Street, a block or two from the Brooklyn Bridge, in Manhattan, where Samuel was a "shipwright."[30] Sarah and Samuel lost Georgia, in Brooklyn, 13 Feb 1882.[29]

War Repercussions

187 Madison Street[31]
Sarah's mother, Ann, died in Sarah's birth home of Pleasant Ridge, New Brunswick, 15 May 1888, at age 83.[32] The repurcussions of the injuries that Sarah's husband, Samuel, had suffered in the Civil War took their toll, and he was admitted to a home for disabled veterans, 5 Oct 1888.[20] He was discharged from the home, 16 Mar 1889, returning to his wife, Sarah, at 187 Madison Street in Brooklyn, but was readmitted less than three weeks later.[20] Sarah's brother, Reuben, died in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, 6 Jun 1890, at age 57.[10] By 1892, Samuel had returned to Sarah and their children, Louise, Lizzie and Alfred, on Madison Street, in Brooklyn, where he again worked as a "ship carpenter" and their daughter, Louise, was a stenographer.[33] Sarah in 1900, describing herself as a "widow," continued to rent at 187 Madison Street in Brooklyn, residing there with two of her adult children, Louise and Alfred, and a nephew, Clarence,[34] but without her husband, Samuel, who, apparently, was again in a home for disabled veterans.[20] Sarah and Samuel's son, Alfred, married a woman named Elizabeth in 1905.[27] Sarah's sister, Agnes, died in Bath, Maine, 12 Dec 1905, at age 77,[8] and her sister, Jane, died there, too, 26 Jan 1907, at age 76.[9] As of 20 Apr 1910, Sarah and her daughter, Louise, resided with her son, Alfred, and his wife and son, still in their rented home at 187 Madison Street in Brooklyn, where Alfred manufactured "jams and preserves" and Louise was a "stenographer" in the "copper" industry.[35]

Husband's Death, Final Years

107 Macon Street[36]
Sarah's sister, Mary, died, like her two previous sisters did, in Bath, Maine, 22 Jan 1912, at age 73.[12] Sarah lost three more of her siblings in 1913. Abigail died in Houghton, Washington, 22 Oct 1913, at age 78,[11] Nathan died in Canby, Minnesota, 26 Oct 1913, at age 87,[7] and William died in Chisholm, Minnesota, 23 Nov 1913, at age 66.[15] Sarah's husband, Samuel, died, apparently at a veterans home in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 23 Jun 1917, at age 84, and he is buried in East Hopkinton Cemetery, in Hopkinton.[20] Sarah applied for his pension benefits the same year.[37] By 1820, Sarah had moved within Brooklyn, to 305 Quincy Street, where she resided with her daughter, Louise, who remained single and still worked as a stenographer.[38] Sarah lost her last surviving sibling, her brother, John, who died in Wisconsin, 6 May 1926, at age 84.[13] Just before the start of the Great Depression, Sarah died, of pneumonia and chronic myocarditis, at her home at 107 Macon Street in Brooklyn, 21 Jan 1929, at age 89.[39] She's buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath, Maine,[39] where three of her sisters had died, and where her daughter, Louise would move and die, as well. She was survived by ___________.
