Esico von Ballenstedt is the first named member of the Ascanier family. He appears nine times in contemporary documents between 1036[1] and 1059,[2] however always only as Graf (comes Hesicho). Only in the 13th century is he called Esicus de Ballenstide by the Annalista Saxo.[3] The extent of his possessions is not precisely known, only that it was in the Schwaben-, Harz- and Hardagau. His wife's name was Mathilde, according to the Annalista Saxo Mathilde von Schwaben,[4] an identification considered not entirely reliable.[5]
