Hi Glenn,

I have been researching all of the Stones that I can find (mostly y-DNA matches) as my dad is also in the same y-DNA group. His kit# is 398273, and is a match to you at 67 markers with GD of 2. I apologize in advance for the length of this message.

We appear to have at least 2 lines of Stones that went to SC very early, and 2 NC lines very early as well.

The name Eusebius comes from Mary O'Brissell's grandfather. Eusebius O'Brissell died in Middlesex County, Virginia. Your Eusebius in SC tells me your line does descend from John & Mary.

If I recall correctly, your Eusebius stated he was born in 1740 in White Plains, Brunswick, Virginia. On a map, this area is only a couple of east of the Mecklenburg county line and about 7-10 miles above the Roanoke River at the NC line. I am in the midst of studying the Stone men who appeared in the first Lunenburg County tithes list in 1746 (John, Richard, William and Thomas) as well as a land record for Richard Stone. Mecklenburg was part of Lunenburg in 1746 and Lunenburg was part of Brunswick in 1740. Brunswick was a huge county in 1740, but White Plains is in the current Brunswick County. • John Stone died in Mecklenburg in 1782. He had a son named Eusebius, but he is not the same one as yours – his Eusebius left a will in 1803 in Mecklenburg. • Richard didn't mention a son named Eusebius. His will was written in 1795 and probated in 1797, and a follow-up Chancery Suit lists his heirs, none of which are Eusebius (or his children). • So that leaves Thomas and William as possible candidates out of the four. Of course, an additional Stone could have been in Brunswick (White Plains) as well that would not be reflected on the Tithes Lists of Lunenburg. There was a Stephen Stone listed with Nicholas Brown in Lunenburg in 1769 and I suspect Nicholas may have been Stephen’s father-in-law or his grandfather. Stephen doesn’t appear on the lists in any other year.

The Stones of Lunenburg have been assumed sons of John Stone (son of John & Mary), and that is certainly possible -- John died young at about 45 yrs old (1735), but he was old enough to have fathered children who were likely adults by then. Besides John, other posited sons of John & Mary are: William, Stephen, Nicholas, and Eusebius. I believe there was an additional son, Thomas, as he appears once in Caroline County Court Orders in 1736 -- it was a road order involving a "road" very close to our Stones (Ann Eubank). Also, Mary's father was named Thomas, and it wouldn't be unusual for him to be named after her father. I haven't found any additional references to him in the Court Orders nor any record of his death (as you would expect if he died). So the 4 men in Lunenburg (and possible additional men in Brunswick) are most likely sons of John or Thomas, and/or perhaps Thomas himself.

In 1740, all the remaining sons were still in Caroline County. William moved to Bedford in 1750, and I believe he is likely the progenitor of the Greenville Co, SC Stones through his son William Jr. Stephen, Nicholas, and Eusebius were still in Caroline County in 1750. By eliminating those 4 brothers, it seems your line might go back through John or Thomas. I also think that your Eusebius was closely connected to the line of John Stone in the Halifax/Franklin County area, b. about 1730 (perhaps brothers). The connections to Riddick and Norfleet appear to apply to both of them (see below).

Another important thing I found that I believe relates to your Eusebius is the mention of Eusebius and "his sister Susannah" in the Will of Marmaduke Norfleet where he left one of his plantations to "Eusebius Stone if he could be found," and if not, to his sister Susannah. Norfleet wrote his will on June 28, 1774, in Northampton County, NC (proved 1775). In 1779, Eusebius Stone "of Craven County SC" sold what appears to be this plantation to Thomas Edmundson. I suspect a relationship of some sort existed between Marmaduke Norfleet and our Stone line of NC as well as John & Mary, although not necessarily a familial relationship. You can read more about Marmaduke Norfleet (Interesting) on a site by Phil Norfleet at: https://pcn2051.tripod.com/marmaduk1.htm. The Norfleets were connected to the Riddick family and one of the sons of John (Halifax/Franklin) married a Stallings whose mother was a Riddick. My dad's closest y-DNA match traces back to the NC Stones.

One thing I want to mention. I have been trying to help identify the ancestor of another y-DNA match, Mike Stone. His earliest ancestor was Wiley Stone, b. 1804 in SC. It appears he was orphaned and apprenticed to John Stone, son of Hezekiah Stone of Person County, NC. Hezekiah was the son of John Stone of Mecklenburg who died in 1782. It looks like we have 2 possible candidates for Wiley's father who died about 1810 (Wiley was almost 6 yrs old when apprenticed): Solomon Stone or Jonathan Stone - both appear to be sons of William Stone of Greenville SC. I haven't looked at your line much -- do you have any Stone men who died about that time that might have been a candidate for his father?

That's probably enough for now. I have more information on these if you're interested. I'm also putting together a lengthy manuscript, with sources, of all the Stone lines if you're interested in that (when it's finished). You can contact me directly at [email address removed] if that works better for you.

DNA evidence indicates my line may trace back to one Nicholas Stone of Armitage, Staffordshire England, referred to as the “Yeoman of Armitage”, who was born in 1587 and died in 1679 in nearby Rugeley. Nicholas married Jane Banister on 13 Jan. 1616 in Rugeley. She was born c1637 and died in Rugeley c1610. My line may trace through their son, Richard Stone of Rugeley, Saffordshire, England. Richard had a son who is very likely to be the man known as John Stone “The Immigrant”, who migrated to Virginia. Richard supposedly also had sons named Nicholas, Richard and Thomas. Richard Stone’s son Richard married Dorothy Belcher on 31 Aug. 1637 at Church Honeybourne in Worchester, England. His son John married Mary O’Brissel and founded the Stone line in Virginia that included his children: Eusebious, John, Stephen, Sarah, William, and Nicholas.

However, close examination of the known habitations of John Stone’s sons indicates none ever dwelled in South Carolina. We DO know that DNA links us to John Stone “The Immigrant” and all his heirs, but so far we only have evidence to indicate more than a 98% statistical probability of linkage within the past 300 years. That statistical tidbit may mean that our line descends from one of John Stone’s brothers, or possibly an uncle. We are joined in our search by many Stone descendants of John Stone, who are as interested as we in determining our familial linkage. It may be that we never resolve the mystery, but . . . we have our hopes.
