Biography

John Boughton was the son of John Boughton Taliaferro (1764-1840) and Nancy Catlett. Nancy Catlett was the 2nd wife of John Boughton Sr. ^[1] When John Boughton Taliaferro, Jr. was born on May 1, 1821, in Alexandria, Virginia, his father, John, was 57. He married Ruth Ann McCandless (1829-c.1898) on August 3, 1845, in Madison, Mississippi.^{[2] [3]} Their known children are:

He died on January 3, 1891, in Tull, Arkansas, at the age of 69.^[6]

An 1870 Census of Pennington Twp, Bradley, Arkansas shows John Talliaferre 49 b. Virginia and his wife Ruth 40 b. Alabama. Their children were Susan 17, Ellen 13, Samuel 10 and Amanda 8. All the children were born in Louisiana. Also living with them was Francis Calvin 21 and John Calvin 3. ^[7]

John Boughton Taliaferro Pioneer Physician

John Boughton "David" Taliaferro was born May 1, 1821, in Bedford, Virginia. He married Ruth Ann McCandless of Alabama and had twelve children, the first born in 1846. From 1848 to 1852 he attended medical college in France and later served as a surgeon in the 3rd Arkansas Regiment, Company H, during the Civil War."He was shot in the hip during the Civil War" The family moved from Louisiana to Warren, Arkansas, sometime after 1869 and live there and farmed. It is assumed that the family then moved "back and forth" between Point Cedar, Clark County, Arkansas, and Tull in Grant County until 1890. During one of these moves, the doctor, then 69 years old, became ill and died on January 13, 1890. Ruth Taliaferro remained in Clark County for a while until she died on October 11, 1898. The children of John and Ruth Taliaferro were Jane Elizabeth, 1846-1936; Levenia Francis, 1848-?; William David "Mackie," 1852-1859 (drowned); Robert Burl "Bobby," 1852-1869; Susan W., 1852-1890 (William Robert, and Susan were triplets); Mria Laura, 1855-1857; Elenor "Kitty," 1857-1876; Annie Paralee, 1860-1892; John Samuel, 1860-1891 (Annie and John were twins); Amanda Thomas, 1862-1912; Edmund John, 1869-1924; and Matthews Howerton, 1871-1957.
