Biography

Michael Considine of Poulnagun was reported to be 35 in the 1901 census^[1] and 40 when he was killed in 1909,^[2] giving a range of implied birth years from 1865 to 1869.

Michael Considine of Poulnagun appears to have had six children by his Canny wife. The mother's first name is Bridget on the birth record of his daughter Mary,^[3] but Kate on the birth record of his daughter Bridget.^[4] Unless there was a clerical error by the registrar of births, this suggests that he may have been married in turn to two different Cannys, but there appears to be no civil marriage record or other proof that any Canny married a Michael Considine, or that her (or their) husband was the son of Thomas Considine and Katherine Kearney of Tullycrine (over 56 kilometres by road from Poulnagun, an abnormally large distance between the homes of couples marrying in Ireland in the late 1800s). Michael of Tullycrine was just one of many Michael Considines whose births were registered in County Clare between 1865 and 1869.^[5]

In the 1901 census, the Canny/Considine household comprised Thos Canny, his wife Bridget Canny, their son Michael Canny, their son-in-law Michael Considene, their daughter Catherine Considene and their granddaughters Mary Considene and Bridget Considene.

Michael was killed by a horsecart while farming.^[6]

Michael's death certificate^[7] confirms that he was "accidentally killed by being knocked down on the road by his own horse", information received from F. F. Cullinan, Coroner for Co. Clare.

In the 1911 census, the two orphaned Considine brothers were enumerated in Poulnagun in the household headed by their uncle Michael Canny and their four sisters were enumerated in the Ennis Convent Industrial School.
