"My father's name was Thomas Smith, but the Pattillos bought him and he took the name of Pattillo. I don't know how much he sold for. That was the only time he was ever sold. I believe that my father was born in North Carolina. It seems like to me I recollect that is where he said he was born."[1]
Thomas was born enslaved about 1813 in North Carolina and was sold! The new owner worked him in Arkansas where he raised his family. After Slavery ending in 1865 [2] during the reconstruction period we find the family in Arkansas.[3]

↑The 13th Amendment, adopted on December 18, 1865, officially abolished slavery, but freed Black peoples' status in the post-war South remained precarious, and significant challenges awaited during the Reconstruction period.
