Biography

Granville Hatfield was born on 20 May 1858 in Wayne County, Kentucky. (See Research Notes) ^[1] He was the son of William Riley Hatfield and Syrena Meredith. He married Elizabeth “Eliza” Harding about 1885. ^{[2] [3] [4] [5] [6]} He passed away on 14 March 1951 in Pall Mall, Fentress County, Tennessee. He was interred in Wolf River Cemetery, Pall Mall, Fentress County, Tennessee. ^[1]

Research Notes

According to the 1860, 1870 & 1880 Census, Granville Hatfield, son of William and Syrena Hatfield was born about 1858 or about 1860. On some of the census reports after his marriage Granville suddenly becomes 9-10 years older. Those census reports, his death certificate & his tombstone give his date of birth as 1849. If that date is true than there is a gap of about a decade between Granville and his next oldest sibling.

If Granville was born in 1849 then he should be on the 1850 Census. According to the 1850 Census Granville’s father William is an unmarried teenager still living with his parents, James and Rhoda Hatfield. According to the 1900 Census James and Rhoda got married about 1857 meaning if Granville was born in 1849 then he was about 8 years old when his parents were married. This seems unlikely.

According to 1900 Census Granville was born May 1857. On 1910 he’s born about 1860. It’s the 1930, 1940, & 1950 Census that his birth year jumped backwards.

I believe his actual date of birth is 20 May 1858 or 1859.
