Biography

Crawford David Nalder was born on 14th February 1910 in Katanning, Western Australia. He was the son of Harry Nalder and Jessie Painter.[1]

He was educated in state schools in the Wagin district, and at Wesley College, Perth in 1924-1925. He returned to farming at Wagin, initially on the family farm, then on his own farm from 1934.[1] He was an active member of the Methodist Church, and from 1932, he served as a lay preacher in the Methodist Church.[2]

On 11th August 1934 at the Methodist Church, Maylands, he married Olive May Irvin.[3] They had a son and two daughters.

His interest in politics was sparked while a student at Wesley, and on his return to Wagin, he became involved in farmers' organisations, the Wagin Road Board and the Country Party.[4] He was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the seat of Wagin on 15th March 1947 which he held until the electorate was abolished in a redistribution in 1950. He was elected to the seat of Katanning on 25th March 1950, and continued to serve in that seat until his retirement on 30th March 1974.[1] He was Deputy Leader of the Country Party from March 1956 to February 1962, then Leader of the Country Party until July 1973. He was Deputy Premier from 1st February 1962 until 3rd March 1971.[1]

He was widowed on 26th January 1973. On 2nd February 1974, in Adelaide, he married Olive Brenda Wade (nee Bond.)[1]

He was awarded the honour of Knight Bachelor (Imperial) on 15th June 1974 for services to local government in WA.[5]

He passed away on 8th December 1994 at Swan Cottage Homes, Bentley, aged 84.[1]
