Biography

Although a seemingly strange name in today's day, Van Renssalaer was not an altogether unusual or uncommon name in New York in the 1790's . The Van Renssalaer Family was prominent in both politics and the Militia and other families began using it as a first name for their children. This name proved to be difficult for record keepers and census takers as you'll find his name misspelled most of the time.

Ransler - the name used on his headstone seemed to be his nickname of choice - married Mary Rosencrans. You will find Rosencrans is also given many different spellings over the years by record keepers. Together Ransler and Mary had at least 14 children, all born in Pennsylvania and given the "new" Carey surname with an "e" spelling. This seemed to be a trend for the Cary families that went west from New York and especially for those that were on the Union side of the Civil War.

Delilah Carey b. 1850 d. Unknown - sometime after 1870

  • Dernilah & Delilah were twins born on 18 Dec 1850. Some genealogies will put them as the same person, however it is clear on the 1860 census's that they were twins and listed as separate children. Twins were fairly common in the Cary/Carey families.
  • Regarding the Stark Cemetery: This cemetery is located in a very rural area and does not have a paved access road leading into it. From the main road, PA Route 92, it is dirt tracks to where the burials are. However its not very far, you can see the headstones from the road. Ransler & Mary are buried in the right half of the cemetery
