Although a seemingly strange name in today's day, Van Renssalaer was not an altogether unusual or uncommon name in New York in the 1790's . The Van Renssalaer Family was prominent in both politics and the Militia and other families began using it as a first name for their children. This name proved to be difficult for record keepers and census takers as you'll find his name misspelled most of the time.
Ransler - the name used on his headstone seemed to be his nickname of choice - married Mary Rosencrans. You will find Rosencrans is also given many different spellings over the years by record keepers. Together Ransler and Mary had at least 14 children, all born in Pennsylvania and given the "new" Carey surname with an "e" spelling. This seemed to be a trend for the Cary families that went west from New York and especially for those that were on the Union side of the Civil War.
