Biography

若棠 (Zhan/Chan Ruotang) was born about 1876. He passed away about 1950.

His family must have come from Qingyuan Village, now a beautiful ancient village, in the north of Wuyuan County. The family must have been already living in the county seat (Wuyuan) because he went to a private primary school there.

He had one son from his first marriage. After his wife passed away, he remarried with a widow from the Jiang family, and had 3 children from this second marriage. He also fostered (or adopted?) the daughter of his daughter's nanny ^[1].

In 1931, his name appears on the Gembloux student card of his son Chan Chunjian who was studying in Belgium, and Chan Ruotang (spelt Tchain Yuo-Tang) was mentioned as being a merchant, domiciled at Nr 120 Yu-Liang Street at Kiukiang in Kiangsi (now Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province). On his daughter Chan Chunbing's Gembloux student card from 1933, his occupation is mentioned as director of a shipping company ^[2].

The family home, and his tomb, are in Wuyuan (then in Anhwei Province, now Jiangxi Province).
