Harold was born about 1854-1856 in Nova Scotia, Canada.<[1][2][3][4] He was the oldest living son of Frederick DeWolfe and Josephine Pernette. When he was about 5, the family emigrated to the United States.
In 1862 he returned with his parents and 3 sibling from a visit to Canada, arriving in Boston.[1] On 21 Aug 1863 he was in Lawrence, Kansas, when Quantrill's raiders entered and sacked the town. Frederick was riding out of town on the opposite side and saw the dust, but did not go back, assuming is was cattle coming in or a wagon train. Josephine hid her 4 boys in the root cellar behind the preserves, and they were not among the men and boys killed.[5] In 1865 he was with the family in Lawrence and Leavenworth, Kansas.[2][3]
In 1871 the family was living in Wicklow, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada.[4]In 1875 Harold and his father (DeWolf-731\Frederick]] had a wholesale business providing ship stores in St. John, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.[6]
