Biography

SUSANNAH PEAREY/PERRY, daughter of William Pearey/Perry and Anna Mitchell; born 27 June 1771, Rochester, New Hampshire; died 26 March 1865, “in her 94th year.”[1] She married (1) 23 February 1792, SIMEON PAGE; at the time of their marriage he was of Epsom and she was of Barrington.[2] She was the mother of Anna, Huldah, Mary, Susannah, Theodate, and Jeremiah Page. Simeon and Susannah also had an adopted son, Samuel Hill, who was born 8 April 1792, but there is no information about when this child joined their family. She married (2) JOSEPH HANCOCK. In 1850 Susannah Hancock, age 79, was living with John P. and Anna (Page) Morrison; in 1860 Susanna Hancock, age 88, was living with the widowed Anna Morrison, daughter of Simeon and Susannah (Pearey) Page.

Susannah’s second husband, Joseph Hancock, was born 29 June 1757, Hampstead, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, died on a visit to the West, 2 March 1831 (one source says in Illinois, the other in Northfield, New Hampshire, where Hancock was buried in Hodgdon Cemetery). His first wife was Polly Heath, by whom he had 10 children; he was a soldier in the American Revolution.[3]

THE PROBLEM:

The surname PEAREY is frequently mistaken for PEAVEY because in 18th and 19th century handwritten records Peavey and Pearey look exactly alike. Many researchers (including me, for a time) were led astray by the Peavey identification, partly because families of both names lived in some of the same regions in New Hampshire.

Susannah's maiden name was not Peavey; it was Pearey (sometimes spelled Perry. EVIDENCE THAT PEAREY IS THE CORRECT NAME WILL APPEAR IN THE PROFILE FOR SUSANNAH'S FATHER, WILLIAM PERRY.

Family Registers

THE FAMILY REGISTERS ARE CORRECT--THE NAME IS PEAREY. From a framed set of family registers. Included in the framed set are Simeon Page/William Pearey records, Ebenezer Morrison records and John Pierce Morrison records.

The Registers are now in the possession of the C. G. Brisee Genealogy Library, Irwin, Iowa.

On the 1850 census Susannah (Pearey) Page was no longer a Page because she had married Joseph Hancock; Susannah Hancock was living with the family of John P. and Anna Morrison (her daughter) in Sanbornton in 1850.
