Biography

William Cushing was born on October 2, 1751 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [1] William was the son of Nehemiah Cushing and Sarah Humphrey Cushing. He was the second child of that name in the family. The first William had died at the age of one year old in October of 1750.[2]

William's father died "in his majesties service" [3]on 12 January 1762 at Crown Point, New York. William was only about thirteen when his father died. He was the oldest son in the family.[4]

William and his siblings were mentioned in the will which their grandfather signed on October 1, 1765. [5]
I give to the children of my late son Nehemiah viz: Rachel Cushing, Abigail Perry, William Cushing, Thomas Cushing, Nathaniel Cushing twenty pounds to be divided equally between them or such of them that shall survive me. Nehemiah Cushing Sr. died on December 11, 1774.

A search of records in Massachusetts in 1848 shows that he served as a private for two weeks in Capt. Freedom Chamberlain's Company of Col. John Bailey's Regiment of Pembroke beginning on April 19, 1775. He then served from May 3 to August 1, 1775 (3 months, 6 days) in Capt. Freedom Chamberlain's Co. in Colonel John Thomas' Regiment of Pembroke. On a return of that company he was listed as a Corporal.[6]

He later joined the Continental Army and on November 6, 1776 was commissioned as Lieutenant in Regiment 12 (sometimes listed as Regiment 14) in Capt. Isaiah Stetson's Company, Colonel Bradford's Regiment in which he served for about three years. [7]

On January 23, 1777 William married Abigail Turner in Pembroke. [8]

He reported in his pension application that he "continued to serve faithfully in said capacity in the same company till the 13th of October 1777 when I received a wound from a cannon ball at Sarasota four days before the taking of Burgoyne... I did not retire from the service till February 7, 1779 - and then only in consequence of inability occasioned by said wound.[9] [7]

He returned to Pembroke where he and Abigail had one son, William, born on January 24, 1780. [10] Abigail died on March 30, 1781 in Pembroke. [11]

William was enumerated in Pembroke for the 1790 U. S. Census. There was one adult male and two females enumerated in addition an adult male and male under sixteen which were likely William and his son. [12]

William and Ruth Briggs of Scituate were married on November 13, 1796 in Scituate by Reverend David Barnes, Pastor of Second Congregational Church. [13]

In the 1800 U. S. Census [14] William and Ruth were enumerated in Pembroke with a male under sixteen years old. William's son would have been about twenty so the identity on this person is unknown or the census was incorrectly recorded.

In the 1810 U. S. Census [15] there was a female under sixteen with William and Ruth. She was perhaps a household servant.

Revolutionary War soldiers and sailors were granted pensions in several Acts of Congress beginning in the early 1810s. William applied and payments of $60 twice annually began on November 24, 1811. [16]

On March 18, 1818, William relinquished his rights to this pension and applied for one based on his disability due to the wound received. [17] On July 17, 1820 his statement includes, "I further testify & declare that by reason of a wound I received from a cannon ball which took away the fleshy part of my thigh great lameness has insured that I am utterly unable to walk without two slaves & am wholly unable labour for my support. I have a wife in the sixty third year of her age who is feeble in health & unable to do the business of my family without assistance, that I had one son by the name of William who has been absent for about twenty years & whether alive or dead, I know not. " He reported that his family usually included four people. This may have included household help. He was granted $68 bi-annually.

William died on January 4, 1825 at the age of seventy-three in Pembroke. [18] [19]
