John's father is estimated to have died in 1232 so John was born prior to that event (or at least no more than nine months after). However, that date is conjectural. Paterson says that his father lived during the reign of Alexander II[2] leaving one without much clarity, Paterson also says John lived in the reign of Alexander III (1249-1285) but again there is little to aid in obtaining accurate dates for birth or death.
