Rebecca (Stockdale) Perigo was born in Bramley, Yorkshire, England.

Rebecca was born 29 May 1760 and was baptized on 22 June 1760 in Bramley (Leeds) West Riding Yorkshire, the daughter of Joshua Stockdale and Sarah Midgeley. [1] Rebecca had four siblings, one brother and three sisters:

  1. Benjamin Stockdale
  2. Hannah Stockdale
  3. Sarah Stockdale
  4. Jane Stockdale

She married William Perigo on 2 October 1786 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. [2] They did not have any children.

After developing chest pains, she consulted Mary Bateman, a local "wise woman" who told fortunes and claimed to be able to remove spells. Bateman told her the pain was the result of an "evil wish" and began to defraud Rebecca and her husband, claiming she could cure her.[3]

Over several months, Bateman treated Rebecca by giving her pudding, believed to have been laced with poison.[4] Rebecca's condition worsened and she died in April 1807 and was buried 26 April 1807 in St. Peter Churchyard, Bramley, Leeds, West Riding Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. [5]

Mary Bateman was accused of her murder and fraud. Bateman was convicted tried at the York assizes in March 1809 and executed.[3]
