Biography

Sir John Wingfield, the younger, of Great Dunham, knight, was the fourth son of Sir John Wingfield, knight, of Letheringham and Elizabeth FitzLewis.[1][2]

He was granted an annity from King Henry VII of £20 for life.[3]

He married Margaret, daughter and heiress of Richard Doveward and Joan Harwick, in whose right he became lord of Great Dunham.[4]

They had eight children as follows:[5][2][6]

  • Alice, married John Calybut of Castleacre
  • Jane, married Gilgant of Ipswich
  • Frances married John Curson of Bastwick, Norfolk
  • Thomas married Elizabeth Woodhouse of Kymberley
  • Margaret married Nicholas Bohun of Chelmondeston
  • Alice married Audley
  • Margret married Anthony Grice of Brodish
  • William of Spickworth, an Augustine Cannon in Westacre, married Margaret Pettinghall

He received a general pardon in 1484 from King Richard III for bearing arms against him.[7]

He was one of the executors of his mother's will in 1500.[8]

He died in 1509 and was buried in Great Dunham, Norfolk.[4]
