Biography

William was born about 1786. The person believed to be his father was Henry Oliver, who as apparent head of household lived in Wayne County, with three sons under age 16, and three females inclusive of a family head, no other free persons, and two enslaved persons: in the 1790 census Henry Oliver was in Wayne, North Carolina, United States.[1]

William married Winifred Teel on 28 January 1815 in Johnston, North Carolina, United States.[2]

Sarah (born about 1800)[3] or Cherry (also born about 1800) may have been an additional wife's nickname. We find them In the 1850 census, in which William (age 64) was in Johnston, North Carolina, United States, with later born children.[4]

Among persons in the household, each apparent among children of this latter marriage to Cherry Sarah (Woodard) Oliver - some of the children's names are mixed because they were reported differently between two census records:

  2. Edit[3] Esther Oliver (born about 1834,[4] or about 1835)[3]
  3. Woodard Oliver (born about 1835,[4] or about 1837)[3]

  5. Asa Oliver (born about 1841)[3]
  6. Cherry Oliver (born about 1840,[4] or about 1843)[3]
  7. Westly Oliver (born about 1843)[4] or Westley Oliver (born about 1845)[3]

Research Notes

  • It is unclear why two census records were taken on what appears to be the same family, with the exception of Asa not being recorded in one of them.
  • Sarah and Cherry do not appear to be William's first (mis-matched) wife Margaret (Lacefield) Oliver (1792-1850, who has since been removed), nor the other reported wife on FamilySearch: Winifred (Teel) Oliver (1787-1827), who had died too soon to mother the children in the 1850 census. However, Cherry "Sarah" (Woodard) Oliver does appear to be an 1830 marriage which needs a profile for her here on WikiTree.
