Alwine was born in 1845 in Neustadt, Oldenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.[1] Although her tombstone, pictured on Find A Grave, puts her birth year at 1848, her actual birth year is 1845. This is documented by family records as well as every Census she appears in (the 1900 Census says March 1945) and her immigration record dated 1865 that says she was 20.

She was the daughter of Johannes Heinrich Litsch and Ann Beata Marie Reppenhagen.

When she was about 25 she married Frederick Charles Florence Schmehl. They had eleven children, seven sons, and four daughters.

She passed away in 1921 in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York, and was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery.
