Biography

David was born about 1470 younger son to William Maxwell and Margaret Moncur.


On 19 Apr 1492 David witnessed his father's charter granting the monastery of Holy Mary of Cupar, the right to do all things necessary to build an aqueduct to their mill of Carsgrange on the lands of Polgavie.[1]

David married Christine Kinnaird about 1490.

David Maxwell and Christine Kinnaird had issue:

Sir William Maxwell of Telling kt, bailie templar of William, Lord of St John in the sheriffdom of Forfar, made a Procuratory on 5 Mar 1497/1498 constituting his sons, David Maxwell and James Maxwell, his bailies depute to give sasine to Sir Alexander Guthrie of that ilk kt of lands of Kincreich, in sheriffdom of Forfar. [2]

At Beltoun on 15 Feb 1503/04, David Maxwell of Polgavie purchased from John Lord Hay of Yester a quarter part of the lands and toun of Polgavie. This was witness by Sir John Hay of Beltoun and Master John Maxwell.[3]

At Dundee on 11 Jul 1508, Thomas Fotheringham of Powrie sold to David Maxwell of Polgavie and his wife Chritine Kinnaird the lands of Balluderon (in the parish of Tealing) in the county of Forfar. [4] Dr Robert Maxwell chaplain was one of the witnesses.

Designed as David Maxwell of Balluderon he acted as depute Sheriff of Forfar by 1510.[5]

At Tealing on 16 Oct 1512 David Maxwell of Polgavie and John his son and heir apparent witnessed his father's charter to the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Tealing. [6]

In 1515 David resigned the lands of Balluderon in the county of Forfar, [7]

On 3 Nov 1516 Sir William Maxwell of Tealing and Margaret Moncur his spouse resigned the lands of Polgavie which David Maxwell of Polgavie once held.[8]

David married secondly to Agnes Bell.

Sometime about 1518, David Maxwell of Polgavie and his wife Agnes Bell purchased the lands of Tarbrax in the county of Forfar from Alexander Ogilvy of that Ilk and his son David Ogilvy. [9]

David probably died about 1530.
