Biography

Matilda Baldwin was born on July 15, 1795 in Virginia, North Carolina, or Tennessee. She was the daughter of Henry Baldwin and Susannah Maulsby.[1]

Her family lived in Frederick county, Virginia, and New Garden, North Carolina, and later in Union County, Tennessee on a farm three miles southwest of the Meeting House at Lost Creek. She attended school in Knox County, Tennessee. Matilda moved to Indiana with her mother and sisters after her father died in 1814.[2]

She married Caleb Williams on April 1, 1818 in Whitewater, Wayne County, Indiana.[3] They had children.

  3. Selina L Williams was born January 14, 1823 in Wayne County, Indiana.[5]
  4. Merchant Williams was born March 19, 1825 in Indiana.[6]

She was a member of the Friends (Quakers).

In 1850 she lived in Economy, Wayne County, Indiana with her son, Merchant.[7]

Matilda died on January 17, 1856.[8]
