James Alexander Grant was a Canadian physician and politician.
According to a secondary source, he was the son of James Grant, advocate of Corrinmony, Invernessshire,[1] James married Jane Ord on August 11, 1829 in Urquhart, Inverness-shire, Scotland.[2] They emigrated to Upper Canada (Ontario) and settled in Charlottenburgh Township, Glengarry County.
James was elected President of the Canadian Medical Association in 1872, and shortly thereafter elected president of the St. Andrew’s Society. In 1887 he was created Knight Commander of the most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, permitting him to use the title of “Sir” and his wife that of “Lady.” From 1867 to 1874 and from 1893 to 1896, James was a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons, first representing the riding of Russell, then the City of Ottawa.
In the Census of Canada, 1881, he was recorded as a physician living in Ottawa, Ontario, with his wife Maria, eight children, and two unrelated people.[3]
Sir James’s chief discoveries in medical science are: Serum Therapy, in Ottawa Protestant Hospital, in 1861; Abnormal Storage of Electricity, in 1884; and Nerve Block, in 1913. Sir James was President of the Canada Medical Association.
