Thomas Seymour (known as Bill) was born on 16 July 1917[1], and his birth was registered in the third quarter at Wellington[2]. He was the son of Cyril Stilborn and Constance Seymour. He seems to have used the spelling of Stilburn until he adopted the name of Langdon.
He was a clerk living at 102 South Road, Masterton when he was gazetted for the Ballot List for World War II on 6 November 1940 for Military District No 7 (Napier)[3]. He served in the Army (Service number WWII 80304)[4]. His next-of-kin on embarkment in 1943 was his mother, Mrs. C. Stilburn, 102 South Road, Masterton. He was a Trooper for the 4th Armoured Brigade, Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
In 1957 he was an accountant living at 30 Oxford Street, Masterton with his wife, both being registered on the Wairarapa Main Electoral Roll[6]. At some stage after that, he adopted the name of Langdon as in 1960 he and his wife were listed on the Wairarapa Main Electoral Roll under that name at the same address[7]. By 1966 they had moved to 36 Renall Street, Masterton, and he was a public accountant[8].
Bill died on 13 October 2002[9]. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Masterton[10].
Research Notes
it is very strange that his birth registration is under the name that he assumed after 1957. An explanation has been sought from Births Deaths and Marriages Online. The explanation is[11]:
"Changes of names are reflected on birth entries so that the subject can use their birth certificates with their current legal name. In this instance it is this."
