Biography

Dolfin was born about 1060.

Earl Dolfin Fitz Gospatric of Carlisle was born circa 1060 at England. Son of Gospatric Earl of Northumbria[1] [2] [3] [4]

Dolfin according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle MS E, a Dolfin was expelled from Carlisle by William Rufus, king of England in 1092 at England. [5]

McGuigan, provides a clear interpretation of the political events and the significant stature of Gospatric's family, particularly in Northumberland, Carlisle, Allerdale. "The identity of Gospatric in the writ may be open to debate because no patronymic is given, but geography and chronology point overwhelmingly to Gospatric son of Maldred, who fathered Dolfin, Waltheof lord of Allerdale, and a younger Gospatric. The first, his eldest son, appears to have ruled in Carlisle when he was expelled by William Rufus in 1092., [6]

Based on one uncertain historic entry he has been described as illegitimate. That entry according to sources is from a 1275 memo that a chronicler extracted from a single document. For this profile at this time his legitimate parentage is that of his siblings in the family group.

All contemporary documents in his lifetime appear to refer to he and brother(s) "Gospatric brother of Dolfin".[7] So its tough to place the 1275 memo as something beyond "tabloid" here-say. McGuigan does note that all of the sons were granted (or inherited ) respectively large lands from their father (mother), and that Dolfin had powers in Carlisle, Allerdale, just as his father and grandfather Maldred before him had. That is a strong point for his pedigree.

Earl Dolfin Fitz Gospatric of Carlisle died after 1092. [9]

There is no indication that Dolfin was killed in 1092, only that his control of Carlisle came to an end. It may be that he retained some position as earl in neighboring Annandale (or even Strathclyde) during the murky era prior to the arriva lof Prince David and Robert de Brus, "first" lord of Annandale.
