Biography

Captain, in the Regiment Grissons in Statendienst.

At his second marriage on 11 October 1716 he was "Residing in Elders, Widower, Place of birth: Chur (in Grisons, Switzerland), Place of residence: Breda (in garrison)." [1]

Background

"He belonged to a very ancient family, tracing its origin to an ancestor who was reputedly related to the Kings of Lombardy and had acted as one of the chamberlains or pares of Charlemagne in Northern Italy in the eighth century.

"The original fiefs held by the Paravicini were situated around Lake Como. A branch settled at Chur in Switzerland, and during the wars of religion the Protestant Johan Caspar Paravicini emigrated from Chur to become an officer with a Swiss regiment serving in the Netherlands. His descendants were, almost without exception, artillery-officers, several rising to the rank of general in the army of the Netherlands." DBNL [2]

"He is the oldest in the proven lineage of the Paravicini di Capelli family, which was included in the Nederland's Patriciaat in 1919.

"The Paravicini di Capelli genus is one of the oldest families in Northern Italy. During the Wars of Religion in the 16th and 17th centuries, the family spread across Europe. Johan Caspar was the first of the family to arrive in the Netherlands. The official name was Paravicini di Gottardini, but once in the Netherlands they called themselves Di Capelli, after Johan Caspar's grandmother."

Career

"He was an officer in the Swiss troops in Dutch service and in that capacity held various positions.

"In 1694 he was captain of the Grisons.

"In 1708 he became lieutenant captain of a new company and in 1712 he became the senior captain lieutenant."
